Mission & Belief

The Promised Land Covenant Church is a missional church in the Bronx that was planted for the sake of the most marginalized, disenfranchised and broken members of our community. The church intentionally targets the many individuals in our community who are perceived – or may perceive themselves – as unworthy of a place in the church. The church intentionally seeks out individuals whose life histories include struggles with poverty, addiction, incarceration, street economies, prostitution, and other urban social ills. The mission of the church is based on Matthew 9:12-14 (NASV) “It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire compassion, and not sacrifice,’ for I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” The Promised Land Church minister calls those who need a physician, while humbly recognizing that we ourselves need continued healing, forgiveness, and restoration. Acknowledging that we are all broken vessels gives us compassion to engage those some consider “the least of these” and call them to come under the care of the same doctor who is treating our sickness.

 

Not only do we minister to the broken, we equip those individuals for ministry. We believe that God delights in transforming “the worst of sinners” into instruments of righteousness, as even some of our own leaders and core members have emerged from backgrounds of poverty, addiction, and incarceration to become shining examples of God’s grace. As the church moves forward to engage people on the street, conduct outreach in the housing projects and homeless shelters, and even plant churches in drug programs and youth prison facilities, we hold fast to the words of Paul as he reminds the church in 1 Corinthians 1: “Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are.” (1 Cor 1: 26-28, NIV)
